Description

Roses and Acorns from Jeannette Douglas Designs. This design was born as a teaching piece for a shop, Acorns & Threads, in the “Rose City” – Portland, Oregon. Jeannette gives some background on the symbolism of each of these motifs:

Vikings associated the Oak tree with the god Thor. Oak trees attracted lightning and were sacred to Thor. The fruit of the oak was believed to be spared by the god’s wrath. Vikings began putting acorns in their windows to protect their homes from lightning. Acorns are an emblem of luck, prosperity, youth, and power.

Roses are a symbol that have rich history and paradoxical meanings. It is at once a symbol of purity and of passion; virginity and fertility; death and life. The rose is the flower of the goddess Venus, but also the blood of Adonis, and of Christ. It is an emblem of transmutation – of suffering and resurrection.

The sampler contains eight rows done in luxurious silk. Many “specialty” stitches are used – there are diagrams and written instructions for all of them, making this design approachable – if you have patience (and Google), your initial skill level with specialty stitches will not be important.
